Have you thought about supporting patients in a Primary Care setting within the NHS?
This CPD will equip you with knowledge and skills necessary to provide acupuncture for chronic pain management within primary care in the NHS. The course includes training on delivering acupuncture to people from vulnerable groups, running a pain programme, and approaching GP surgeries to set up chronic pain management programmes.
The course will be delivered in GP practices in Tower Hamlets, East London to facilitate experience of working with people that typically live with chronic pain.
Course Objectives:
Cultural Competence
An understanding of the specific health challenges experienced by disadvantaged and vulnerable groups and the role of acupuncture in supporting their needs.
Develop cultural competence to be able to effectively engage with people from ethnic minority groups.
Learn about creating a safe and culturally appropriate supportive environment for people receiving acupuncture in a multi-bed/group setting
Clinical Practice, NHS and Supervision
Gain hands-on experience through supervised clinical practice in a NHS GP practice.
Receive feedback and support through supervision and debriefing sessions.
Develop skills for effective communication and collaboration with other healthcare professionals within the NHS.
Explore strategies for the integration of acupuncture into a chronic pain management programme.
Understand the role of acupuncture in a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain within the NHS.
Clinical skills, Acupuncture and Chronic Pain Management
Learn about acupuncture treatment approaches in a community space that are appropriate and supportive of individuals who have experienced trauma.
Ways to avoid burn out and protection – vicarious trauma.
Explore evidence-based approaches to using acupuncture in treating chronic pain conditions.
Biographies
Wellington Way Health Centre
Wellington Way Health Centre is a GP practice situated in Tower Hamlets, East London. It is a medium sized practice with around 12,000 registered patients and is a teaching practice for medical students and trainee GPs. There are six GPs and an extended multidisciplinary team including pharmacists and physiotherapists. Tower Hamlets is the most deprived borough in London and has a large proportion of people from ethnic minorities (34% Bangladeshi population) with over 90 languages spoken. 71% of people from a Bangladeshi background experience chronic pain compared to the national average of 43%.
Dr Elen Williams
Dr Elen Williams BSc (hons), MBBS, MSc, MRCGP is a GP and Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners working in Tower Hamlets. Dr Williams qualified from Barts and The London Medical School 17 years ago and at University College London read Pharmacology BSc (hons), obtaining a MSc in Mental Health Research Science. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at City University of London, and she will shortly commence a PhD investigating chronic pain treatment in severe mental illness. Dr Williams is a clinical tutor and medical school examiner.
Marianne Killick
With over a decade of clinic experience, Marianne is highly qualified to help her patients fulfil their health goals, Marianne graduated from the Northern College of Acupuncture in York in 2010 and has been in private practice ever since. Prior to training as an acupuncturist, Marianne worked with asylum seekers and refugees, and from her work with torture victims, has developed an interest in the mental/emotional aspect of health and well-being. Marianne has also worked with post-civil war communities and AIDS support groups in El Salvador.
Josephine's Cerqua
Josephine graduated from the University of Westminster in 2002. She has a special interest in women’s health and has worked in many different roles including acupuncturist at the NHS Gateway multibed clinic, and clinical assistant at Westminster Polyclinic. She was a contributor to the textbook, Electroacupuncture A Practical Manual and Resource, by David Mayor. As well as running her own private practice, Josephine is a member of a team of practitioners at a London-based integrated fertility clinic, working alongside consultants, midwives, and nurses. She is a member of the teaching team at City College where she leads on the Personal and Professional Development module and supervises in the student clinic. Josephine completed her supervision training in 2023.
Course is a collaboration with CCA and The Wellington Way Health Centre, Tower Hamlets.
